Most reef problems are designed in.
A sump nobody can reach without emptying the cabinet. A return pump you can hear from the couch. Plumbing with no way to isolate anything. Lighting picked for how it looked in a video instead of what the corals need.
None of these show up on installation day. They show up in month eight, and they make the reef a little harder to keep healthy every month after that.
We design reefs the way we’d want to maintain them. Because we’re planning to.
The decisions that make a reef work
A reef isn’t a list of equipment. It’s a set of decisions that either work together or fight each other for years. These are the ones we spend the most time on.
Where it lives
The room decides more than people expect: floor load, electrical, heat, noise, sunlight, and how the reef will be viewed. A large reef with rock, sand, and a full sump can weigh well over a ton. Freestanding, built into a wall, or integrated into cabinetry, placement comes first.
Access and serviceability
Every reef needs hands inside it regularly. We design so the sump, equipment, and plumbing can actually be reached, and so routine work doesn’t mean emptying a cabinet or taking apart the room.
Filtration and flow
Filtration is sized to the livestock you want and the bioload you’ll actually have, not to the biggest box that fits. Flow is planned around the rockwork and the corals, so there are no dead spots quietly collecting detritus.
Lighting
Chosen for the corals you want to keep and the way the room is used, with room to grow into the reef the system will become.
Plumbing
Quiet, leak-conscious, and built so parts of the system can be isolated and serviced without shutting everything down. Drains designed to fail safe, not drains that hope.
Automation and redundancy
A controller, monitoring, and automatic top-off can take a lot of risk out of a reef, but only if they’re set up to fail safely. Oklahoma loses power, from ice storms in winter to severe weather in spring, so we plan for what happens to flow and temperature when it does. Long summers get the same planning, because a hot room becomes a hot reef.
Livestock goals
What you want to keep decides almost everything else. An SPS-dominant reef, a mixed reef, and a soft coral system need different lighting, flow, chemistry, and care. We start with the reef you want to look at and work backward.
Aquascaping
Rockwork that’s stable, open enough for flow, easy to clean around, and leaves corals room to grow into it. The scape should still look right in three years, not just on the day it’s filled.
Future maintenance
Every decision above gets one more question: what will this be like to maintain? Automated dosing or manual? Where do water changes happen? How does top-off water get there? Those answers are easy on paper and expensive in a finished room.

From first conversation to first coral
- Complimentary design consultation. We start with the space: where the reef will live, what the room can support, what you want to see, and how involved you want to be.
- Design. A complete system plan covering the aquarium, filtration, plumbing, flow, lighting, automation, aquascape, and a livestock plan. You see it and question it before anything is built.
- Installation. The system is built, plumbed, filled, and tested. Everything runs before any livestock goes in.
- Startup. A reef isn’t finished when the water goes in. It’s just getting started. We mature the system and add livestock on a plan, at the pace the reef can handle.
- Ongoing maintenance. The people who designed and built your reef keep it healthy. Nobody knows the system better.

Do you design freshwater or fish-only aquariums?
No. Every system we design is a reef.
Can you work with my builder, architect, cabinetmaker, or designer?
Yes, and we’d rather be involved early. Electrical, plumbing access, floor support, ventilation, and service access are all easier to plan before the walls close and the cabinetry is built.
How long does a new reef take?
Design and installation depend on the system and the space, so we’ll talk timing during the consultation. The part people underestimate is startup. A reef matures over months, and we add livestock at the pace the system can handle rather than rushing to a finished look.
Will you install equipment on my existing reef?
We don’t take on one-off equipment installs. For reefs we maintain, upgrades are part of the ongoing plan. If you’re thinking about replacing or rebuilding a system entirely, that’s a design project, and it starts with a consultation.
Do I need to know anything about reefs?
